Mary Kay Bern Obituary

Mary Kay Bern nee Scales, age 94, formerly of Homewood, IL. Wife of the late Jerry E. Bern Sr, Mother of Lester (Gianna) Bern, Jerry (Christine) Bern, Mary Kay Bern and James Bern. Grandmother of Lauren (Josh) Britton, Evan (Alecia) Bern, Celeste (Michael) Botelho, Ellis Bern, Brendan Bern, Karina (Michael) Carney, James Solger and Colby Bern. Great Grandmother of Raelyn and Zoey Bern, Lake Britton, Isabella Botelho, Raiden Carney.


Mary was a pioneer in the aviation industry, flying for Monarch Air Services / Midway Airlines in the 1950s on a regular run Chicago to Miami and Chicago to NYC. After meeting the love of her life, Jerry Bern, at Chicago’s southside Ashburn Airport, she married and raised her family in Homewood.


Mary will be remembered for her love and devotion of family. She is preceded in death by her mother and father Peter and Mary Scales, Peter Scales, Rosemary (Edward) Mulheran, Patricia (John) Trevillian, Kathleen Scales, William (Kathleen) Scales. Many nieces and nephews.


Visitation Monday, October 28, 2024 at the Tews-Ryan Funeral Home 18230 Dixie Highway in Homewood from 3-8pm. Funeral Tuesday with 9:15am prayers from the Funeral Home to St. John Neumann Church (formerly St. Joseph Church) Mass 10 am. Interment Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
