PFC USMC Obituary

Private First Class, Erwin Shaftsbury King, USMC of Clarksburg, MA was killed in action in the Battle of Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands in the Pacific Theater at the age of 18 on September 24, 1942.

He was born in Shaftsbury, VT on August 11, 1924, a son of Erwin Cornelius King and Emilia (LaFountain) King. He attended Drury High School and enlisted in the US Marines on January 22, 1942.

Known as "Shazzy", he served in Baker Company, First Battalion of the 7th Marines and was killed in combat six days after arriving on the island.

Shazzy's 3 sisters and 2 brothers, Lucille King LaBonte, Gertrude King Clarke, Eva King Gruner, Francis "Pat" King and George "Jud" King are deceased. Survivors include several nieces and nephews including Judith LaBonte Richard of Warner, NH, Lynda LaBonte Pruden of North Pownal, VT, Bruce LaBonte of Bradenton, FL and Mark Clarke of North Adams, MA.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A service to celebrate the life of PFC King will be held on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, the 82nd anniversary of his death, at 11:00 AM at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, WEST CHAPEL, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA. Burial with military honors will follow in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are Monday from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

Tonight myself and others from the LAX USO ( Families of the Fallen) will have the honor of receiving Marine PFC Erwin King remains in a dignified manner as it arrives in Los Angeles Ca. We will also be there to help send his remains to its final destination. Our condolences to the family of the fallen hero and that he final rest eternally next to his parents after so many years apart. May God bless him and his Family.
