Marjorie Doan
Jefferson, NH - Marjorie Marran Doan, hiker, gardener, needlework artist, and conservationist of Jefferson, NH died Sunday, February 16, 2025 at the Morrison Nursing Home in Whitefield, NH. She was 95.
Marjorie was the beloved wife and hiking companion of Daniel Doan, who predeceased her in 1994. Dan and Marjorie moved to Jefferson when they married in 1984, and they created a beautiful home where Marjorie lived until she entered The Morrison in 2022. Marjorie was kind and spontaneously generous. Her work ethic was remarkable. She will be remembered for her willingness to tackle any project, however small or large and for her beautiful needlework and sewing projects.
Marjorie was born on June 4th, 1929 in Rockville Center, New York, daughter of John S. & Susanne (Herzog) Marran. Marjorie spent her childhood years in Stamford, CT. She graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in Stamford in 1947, and in 1951 from Trinity College in Washington, D.C. with a B.A. in English. Later, she went on to study at The University of New Hampshire where she earned her Master's Degree in Education in 1976.
After college graduation, Marjorie worked for three years for Trans World Airlines as a Hostess, then taught second grade in Berlin, NH. Her first marriage to R.H. Kneeland ended in annulment and divorce. She was a member of All Saints & St. Agnes Catholic Church, where she was an organist & choir member. Marjorie served on the Jefferson Planning Board From 1985 to 1993, and on the Jefferson Conservation Commission from 1990-2007. She was Secretary of the Jefferson Historical Society and devoted countless hours to fundraising and cataloging. She was a lifetime member of the Appalachian Mountain Club, a 50 year member of the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests, member of The Audubon Society of New Hampshire, and contributor to countless local and national conservation and animal welfare organizations.
Marjorie was predeceased by her parents, her brother Robert J. Marran and his wife Pauline (Polly), her husband Daniel Doan, and Dan's daughter Penelope. Marjorie is survived by Dan's daughter Ruth MacDougall of Center Sandwich, NH, Dan's granddaughter Thane Joyal and husband James P. Gibbs of Concord, NH, and Dan's great-grandson Hamish Peter Doan Gibbs of Boston, MA.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 12pm on Friday, May 9th at St. Agnes Church in Jefferson. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Lancaster.In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions can be made to the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests (
