Agapito Vigil Obituary
(Pete) John Agapito Vigil was born on August 18, 1930, to Emilio and Cleofes Maria Vigil in the San Luis Valley of Colorado, during the Great Depression. He was raised in a modest home without plumbing and their home was warmed by a wood burning stove. Life wasn't easy and the entire family would work on the farm for basic needs. The close-knit, Spanish-speaking community of San Luis nurtured lifelong friendships that Agapito cherished throughout his life. The family descendants trace lineage back to early Spanish settlers in the region.
Agapito displayed creativity and a love of learning by carving wooden toys and wood chains by hand. He was known for his cheerful whistling as he worked and his love for music. He also worked on cars with his father. He learned to maintain and fix automobiles - a skill he used to take care and repair family vehicles throughout his life.
Family visits to San Luis included playing the guitar with his father Emilio, who played the violin, and his Uncle Fred, who joined in on the trumpet. Then card games and story telling around the dining table. Time spent included visits with cousins, friends, aunts and uncles in San Luis, Colorado Springs, Rocky Ford and Pueblo. Fostering Family was extremely important to Agapito.
Agapito began working as a young boy, picking potatoes, milking cows, and gathering wood. Hard work was ingrained in him. As a young adult, he worked for the railroad before developing a skilled trade as a carpet layer.
In his 20's, Agapito had two daughters, Rosalie and Mary Ann in Pueblo, CO.
In 1967, he married his beloved wife Ninfa (Andrade) and later bought a home and settled in Westminster, Colorado. Together, they raised three daughters: Tammy, Patty, and Mary.
Agapito was known for his kindness, sense of humor, and generous spirit. He was the kind of man who would stop to help a stranger and light up a room with his jokes, storytelling, and quick wit. He was deeply loved by all who knew him.
He found peace in gardening, mountain fishing trips, card games, and especially in playing his guitar. A devout Catholic, he prayed the rosary nightly on his knees-a quiet reflection of his enduring faith and discipline.
Though he faced great loss-including the early passing of his best friend and brother Armando, and later, his wife Ninfa-Agapito carried his grief with quiet strength. His life was a testament to resilience, love, family, and faith.
Agapito was a loving son, father and grandfather who will be deeply missed. Per his wishes, he will be laid to rest in the San Luis Valley-the place that shaped his heart and spirit.
Agapito proceeded in death by his beloved wife - Ninfa Vigil (Andrade), brothers - Arthur and Armando Vigil, parents - (Emilo) Antonio Jose Vigil and Cleofes Maria Vigil (Martinez), Grandparents- Eulalio and Epifania Martinez and Juan De Dios Vigil and Vicenta Vigil and many more beloved family members.
