Didn't know Don, but he was roommates with my brother in law, Tony Stricker, when they played for the Jets. Don was an honorary pall bearer at Tony's funeral in 1987. So sorry for your loss. My grandson, who is 11, but who keeps up with sports, just told us today.

May my condolences bring your family consolation and peaceduring this painful time. 1 Thessalonians 4:14For if we have faith that Jesus died and rose again, so too God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in death through Jesus.

Don grew up with my Father in Colorado City TX. My Father ended up being a Texas Highschool Football Coach and Don would frequently come speak football banquets, or play golf in his custom "boot" golf spikes. One of the nicest individuals I've ever met and even when I was kid, or young adult, he would always find time to have a conversation with you, especially if you wanted to talk football. My condolences to the family.

Don Maynard changed my life when I first met him at Inn of the Mountain Gods in Ruidoso, NM, on March 7th, 2018. We had a great visit. He was so appreciative of life and supportive of mine as well. Very humble, he didn't even reveal he was a Hall of Famer until the end of our conversation. Ironically he initiated the conversation by asking what NFL team I played for. I didn't realize I was chatting it up with Superbowl royalty until 20 minutes into our conversation. He was so funny and light hearted and interesting. We hit it off immediately. He actually invited my wife and I to his mountain home the next day. We accepted and met him and his wife there the next morning. They were feeding mule deer in their front yard when we arrived. He showed me around and explained some of his inventions to me. He was very proud of a brand of work gloves he had discovered and actually sent a pair home with me. The gloves came with a condition...I was to work in them not hang them up for display. True to my word I thought about Don and his hard work ethic every time I slipped those gloves on back at my TX farm. Don would have been proud as I wore holes in every finger. I finally had to retire them because they had become defenseless against prickly pear cactus and green briars. A special unexplainable feeling came over me when I wore those gloves. And I got more work accomplished in that pair than any other. Don taught me the honor and glory in working hard. Those gloves were symbolic of that. They still have a place in tool box and Don forever has a place in my heart. You will be missed dearly my friend.

Was and will always be one one of my football idols! I wore his number in my playing days, my license plate has the number 13 as part of a vanity plate. I lived in Elmont NY, a 20 min drive to Hofstra, we would bike there to watch the Jets practice, this was when you could actually talk to the players. It was s treat. This was in the early 70s, they made you feel special! Thanks for those special few minutes! Rest in Paradise Mr Maynard!

Although I was on the Jets Taxi squad in 1965, Don made me feel like I was on the first team. I'll miss playing golf with Don and seeing him in his golf cowboy boots (cleats and all). He was a real pro, on and off the field.

As a 10 yr old RAIDER fan in the early days of the AFL, I still loved watching the likes of #13 DON MAYNARD. The RAIDER/JETS games along with the KC CHIEFS is what Football was all about. RIP DON, you were a PRO football legend.

Don Maynard the best at his trade in the AFL with the New York Jets.
Broadway Joe was lucky to have him as his go to receiver.

Don and Joe were one of the most unlikely, fortitudinous, talented/skilled, telepathic, and clutch QB/Receiver combinations (or any combination in any sport, for that matter) ever. They were a joy to watch, they were fun, they shined brightly on the big NY stage, and their respective stories are delightfully interesting and awe-inspiring; true studies in supreme confidence, teamwork, the ability to overcome during the most tying of circumstances, ultimately resulting in the highest levels of achievement.

You showed them, Don! You showed the coaches, management, and your teammates; you showed your fellow AFL stars; you showed the haughty NFL; you showed the admiring football fandom; you showed the Pro Football Hall of Fame, which earned you well-deserved enshrinement; you showed the world!

Rest in peace, Country Don. You led by example, your presence and performances brought a lot of smiles and pride, and it was privilege to watch you play.
