Doris Lewis Obituary

A WOMAN OF GRACE

Doris Lillian Lewis

Doris Lillian Lewis was born in the small town of Edwards, Mississippi, she was the cherished first daughter of Ruth Patterson Moncure and Elbert Moncure. She was a beacon of light and a guiding force to her four beloved sisters—Ethel Deloris, Flora Glyn, Alfrieda, and Hilda. Gifted in music, she captivated hearts from early childhood, lending her talent to the piano, her voice, and the saxophone, etching melodies into the memories of all who knew her. A favorite childhood recollection was the joyous afternoons spent with her grandparents, where the excitement of horse rides ignited a lifelong love for adventure.

In 1954 Doris married Sherron L. Lewis Sr. in Chicago, Illinois. To this union, seven children were born- two sons: Sherron Lonard, Jr. and Blaine Elbert, and five daughters: Turna Ruth, Monette LaBelle, Stephanie Jo, Bridgid Beth, and Darla Kay.

An academic achiever, Doris pursued her education with zeal, graduating from high school in Chicago before earning her Bachelor of Arts from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. She began her professional career as a nurse serving in military hospitals accompanying her husband on his assignments across the country and in Europe. Her dedication to nurturing young minds later led her to become a certified Montessori School Director and Teacher, a testament to her passion for education. Doris poured her heart into teaching, touching countless lives, and her students often returned to invite her to their high school graduations, a poignant reflection of her profound influence.

Doris embraced the role of a grandmother with joy as her grandchildren affectionately referred to her as Pocohontas, inspired by her long, flowing hair. She instilled in them a sense of wonder, taking them on unforgettable Amtrak adventures to see “The Lion King,” sharing cherished moments over dinners, and gifting each child an interactive globe, igniting their curiosity about the world.

Her life was woven with threads of friendship and community. A beloved member of Skyway Baptist Church for over thirty years, she contributed her musical talents to the church's ministry as a pianist, delivering harmony and warmth to all. Doris traveled extensively, touring Europe as part of a senior choir, leaving echoes of her laughter and the sound of music wherever she went. She found happiness in gathering with friends, creating a tapestry of memories filled with humor and fellowship that will forever resonate in their hearts.

Doris will be remembered not just for her professional accolades but for her compassion, kindness, and unwavering support. Her friends, including the wonderful Eloise Burney, Barbara Lowery, Tamika Uther, and Tammy Osuma, will carry her spirited laughter with them, as she lit up every room she entered. One of the greatest gifts she instilled in her children was the showing them how to love the Lord!

Doris Lillian Lewis, a vibrant soul whose life spanned nearly a century, filled with love, laughter, and an indomitable spirit. Doris left this world peacefully at Brookdale Assisted Living in Denver, Colorado, surrounded by those who cherished her, on October 4, 2025.

Doris Lillian Lewis leaves behind a loving legacy in her daughters: Turna R. Lewis of Washington, DC, Monette Roberts (husband Frank) of Aurora, Stephanie Henson of Phoenix, AZ, Bridgid Brosseau, and Darla Vaughn, both of Denver. Her legacy continues with her cherished grandchildren—Nina Henson, Sherron Lewis III, Channing Roberts, Jasmyne Garrett, Anson Lewis, Heaven Roberts, Dominick Roberts, Connor Stephens and Frank Robert Jr—and nine great-grandchildren, who will forever hold her close in their hearts.
