James William “Bill” Black, 76, a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and cherished brother, passed away surrounded by love on December 14, 2025.
Bill was married to his high school sweetheart, Jan Black, for 53 years—a partnership built on loyalty, hard work, and deep affection. Together they raised a family and created a home rooted in care, laughter, and dedication.
A retired control systems engineer, Bill exemplified perseverance and commitment. While working full time and providing for his young family, he worked tirelessly to complete his degree from Metropolitan State University of Denver, an achievement he was deeply proud of and one that reflected his strong work ethic and determination.
Bill had a lifelong passion for N-scale model trains. He built an intricate and beloved model railroad, spending countless hours tinkering, improving, and enjoying every detail. It was a source of great joy and relaxation for him. He also had a wonderful sense of humor and often joked that his retirement plan was to “bounce from cruise ship to cruise ship” and see the world—an expression of his curiosity, optimism, and love for adventure.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his two brothers, and a nephew. He leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and quiet strength that will continue through his wife, children, grandchildren, extended family, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, December 29, 2025, at: Horan & McConaty Funeral Service 11150 E. Dartmouth Avenue Denver, CO 80014 In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Bill’s memory to the Alpha-1 Foundation, a cause close to the family.
