Margaret: I have just learned about John's passing. I sent him a FB message about a week ago and had not heard back. I am so sorry for your loss. John was a great colleague at Gaston Snow and thereafter a great friend. I treasure many of the pieces of his art that I have in my home here in Tokyo! I visited John several years ago at your home in Connecticut and we had a great afternoon. Again my condolences to you and your son! Chris O'Brien

John Michael Carnright. I knew him well, and he was a valued piece of my life for more than 70 years. We bonded in first grade, and the only thing that could separate us afterwards was his unexpected passing away.
John was more than my friend; he was a lifetime creative companion. When he decided to turn his ARIA HAHN book into a multimedia project, he asked me to write the symphony for it.
Aside from knowing John as an artistic creator, I knew him even better as a person. That began during the many years we walked home from school together. His good, positive and friendly nature was apparent even then.
In adulthood, whenever John faced a health or artistic career problem, he would rise above it in such a calm manner that was often surprising. Instead of moaning and groaning, he would say to me, "It is what it is", then take on the challenge.
While John was always motivated by his art, what he cherished most was his marriage and fatherhood. Margaret and William were his greatest masterpieces.
Less obvious but still important to John were his spiritual beliefs. He strongly believed the soul does not expire when the body gives out. While there is no certainty where John´s spirit now resides, it is safe to say that he arrived there far sooner than expected.
Although we are all deeply saddened by his recent departure, to those not accepting the why, when, and how of it, John would surely smile coyly and simply say to them, "It is what it is".

Oh my! Shocking news today ! -- John was a fascinating fellow, a sculptor who worked in the hard-wood of tree stumps, and painted conceptual figuratives. He was a service veteran of the US Air Force. I first knew him as an early resident of The NEST Art Center in Bridgeport, CT, where he kept a large open studio for many years that was filled with his tree-work sculptures in aesthetic displays, later maintaining his work studio at his home in Milford, and a smaller studio at the NEST in which he always gave guidance and wisdom to others. He was a true enthusiast of other artists in his age group, and of young writers and poets many of whom he sponsored and connected with opportunities! His own writings, such as his novel "Aria Hahn," were complex situations and "cautionary tales" set in distant future worlds. Living in Los Angeles in his youth, some of his friends include Ray Manzareck of The Doors, Mama Cass of the Mamas & the Papas. and the Beat poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti.
Needless to say, I'm in shock still from learning of his passing only this morning, and sad having missed his funeral... I would surely have been there! I'll really miss you, John.

a great man and friend is gone and he'll be missed on both sides of the atlantic. but he "lives" on in his paintings, sculptures and written words.
as it's too late for an autobiography it is hoped that a capable biographer of some sort comes forward with some testimony about this personality whose cv contains far more interesting experiences than those of many a "normal" citizen on this planet.
what a great loss for Margaret and Will, my heartfelt condolences.

Dear Margaret and Will,
I was saddened to hear of John's passing. He was a kind and gentle spirit and I was lucky to get to know him. I will cherish my memories of him from the early days at KHS with Jesse and Will to the times spent at the Nest and the film version of Aria Hahn with Maya.
Sending thoughts and love to you both.

Margaret and Will, I am so sorry got your loss. John used to come to gatherings with our friend Berh and he was so kind and funny with my husband and daughter. He also encouraged me to pursue my art. His painting of a tree is on my daughter´s bedroom wall and has been for many years. We are so lucky to have gotten to know him.
