Tom was the beloved son of Martha and Fred Kern of Herkimer, New York, growing up with his brothers Fred, Stephen and Matt.
He met Karyn when they were 19, and they have been together ever since. They both attended Kansas State University, where Tom earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering. They are blessed by their children and granddaughter: Eric and his fiancé Robbie; Stuart and his wife Annie; Kayla and her husband Xavier, and their beautiful daughter Katrina.
Tom worked for the United States government for more than 30 years and was promoted to the highest levels of civilian service.
He applied his technical expertise and steady leadership to solving complex engineering challenges in service to his country.
Despite the honors afforded his successes, Tom remained humble, never seeking recognition, and earned the deep respect of so many because of his dedication to mission and family above himself.
Tom spoke his faith with his actions and will be remembered for his humor, intelligence, integrity, loyalty, hard work, humility, generosity, quiet strength, and love. He has left us far too soon, and all who knew and loved him lament his sudden passing.
By the mercy of God we will rejoice with him yet again in that land that knows no parting. Farewell dear son, brother, uncle and friend. Until we meet again, dear husband, father, and grandfather. You will be deeply missed by the many lives you have touched.
Goodbyes are only for those who love with their eyes. Because for those who love with heart and soul there is no such thing as separation. - Rumi
