Barbara Newkirk Obituary
Barbara graduated from Upsala College in New Jersey, where she earned her degree in French and English. While she dedicated much of her life to her family as a devoted homemaker, Barbara also played an active role in her community as a scout leader and Sunday school teacher. Her resilience shone brightly when, at the age of 70, she moved 2,000 miles from her familiar surroundings to a new home in Corrales, New Mexico and even tackled the challenge of mastering the computer at age 80.
She is survived by her daughters Cindy Clemens and her husband Nick of Maryland, Alison Freeman of North Carolina, son David Newkirk and his wife Sharon of New Jersey, and daughter Laura Passner and her husband Glen of North Carolina. Barbara also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren, Srs. Parousia, Sophia, and New Eve Clemens SSVM; Steven Freeman, his wife Alicia and Paul, Julia, and Daniel Freeman; Emma, Olivia, and Rayna Newkirk; Becky and Will Passner. She was also a great-grandmother to Jackson Freeman. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents Morris and Harriet Wheeler, her sister Ruth Wheeler, and her husband of 25 years, Edward Francis Newkirk.
A celebration of Barbara's vibrant life is planned at her home in Corrales on Sunday, October 27 at 2 pm. Her legacy of love, resilience, and adventure will be cherished and remembered by all who knew her. Friends who reside far away are invited to participate by sharing thoughts or pictures below.

The first time I met Barbara, I was visiting her daughter Cindy. As we came through the house, she and her husband were playing a word game using the reader's digest, and they asked if I would like to join them. I was so nervous, meeting parents, that I said no, even though I love that game. Many visits later I came to admire Barbara for her intelligence and competence, her relaxed attitude, and how she enjoyed life. And she was a great mom and scout leader!
