Arthur Ernest Walfred Pyhala, 86, of Lyman, South Carolina, husband of Edith Mattson Pyhala, entered into eternal peace on September 20, 2024.
He was born in Embarrass, Minnesota to the late Emil and Saima Carlson Pyhala. Arthur was a born-again Christian and member of First Baptist North Spartanburg. He loved discussing his Christian faith with others and could keep a conversation going for hours about his faith. Arthur graduated from Embarrass High School in 1956, and then left to proudly serve his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1957 to 1961; and then in the United States Marine Corps Reserves until 1963. He always reminded us "once a Marine, always a Marine!" Arthur later moved to New Hampshire, where he met and married his beautiful wife, and where eleven of his children were born. He worked in the steel industry for the majority of his time there. In 1994, he and his family moved to South Carolina, and he worked in the home construction industry until he retired early, after a car accident left him disabled.
In addition to his wife of 57 years, he leaves behind eleven children, Lorena Pyhala of Inman, SC, Davin Pyhala (Heather) of Williamston, SC, Marty Pyhala (Rhonda) of Taylors, SC, Sherry Anderson (Heath) of Lyman, SC, Michael Pyhala (Leah) of Lyman, SC, Roy Pyhala (Shanna) of Greer, SC, Mark Pyhala (Katie) of Greer, SC, Priscilla Lemieux (Ryan) of Greer, SC, Larissa Baiera (Daniel) of Lyman, SC, Kevin Pyhala of Lyman, SC, and Rachael Hellams of Lyman, SC; his three sisters, Aili Nelmark of Embarrass, MN, Edith Bisila (Donald) of Circle Pines, MN, and Sandra Mattila (Robert) of Brush Prairie, WA; seventeen grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, are four brothers, Sylvester, Edwin, Francis, and Henry Pyhala; two sisters Ethel and Anne Pyhala; one daughter, Diana Pyhala; and one granddaughter, Greta Lemieux.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 29, 2024 at First Baptist North Spartanburg, 8740 Asheville Highway, Spartanburg, SC, officiated by Dr. Michael Hamlet. Burial will follow in Wood Memorial Park.
Visitation will be held 1:00-2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 29, 2024 prior to the service at the church.
The family is at the home.
