I posted this on Facebook but wish to share with his family and friends.
Smitty worked for me around 1980. He was real young and a real handful. But then again every Machinist Mate at the time was. Smitty and two other shipmates climbed a mountain with me in Toulon, France. It was a memorable moment for me. It was memorable because we did something other than what Sailors are known for. He had dreams and aspirations. I believe he achieved them. The last time we spoke (email) he was on top of the world. Fair winds and following seas.
