Virginia Rawson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 1, 2025.
Virginia May Rawson (née Alexander), 82, passed away on January 30, 2025, in Manassas, Virginia, at Prince William Medical Center due to cardiac failure. A longtime resident of Lancaster, California, she had recently relocated to Warrenton, Virginia, to be near her daughter.

Born on December 24, 1942, in Sandpoint, Idaho, Virginia was the fifth of eight children of Roy D. and Jessie Alexander (née Cain). She is survived by her sister Ruth Ann Harper of Sandpoint, Idaho, and her daughter Kimberlee Calvert (née Bruno) and son-in-law Dan Calvert of Warrenton, Virginia.

Virginia proudly served her country in the United States Air Force as a clerk at Otis Air Force Base in Massachusetts from 1962-1966. Following her military service, she married in 1967 and welcomed her daughter in 1968. Virginia graduated from the University of Albuquerque Nursing Program in 1977. For over four decades, she worked as a Registered Nurse across the western United States until retiring in California in 2019.

In 2020, Virginia moved to Virginia to spend her remaining years close to her daughter. Never one to remain idle, she worked part-time as a Pharmacy Technician at the Warrenton Safeway Pharmacy and seasonally at Merrifield Garden Center in Manassas-a role she greatly enjoyed. A lover of nature and animals, Virginia cultivated a beautiful rose garden in California and embraced adventurous pursuits like scuba diving, whitewater rafting, and skydiving on her 50th birthday.

Virginia's legacy is one of hard work, humor, independence, and patriotism. She supported veterans and animal organizations throughout her life. Her wishes were to be cremated and for no formal service. In her memory, donations may be made to the VFW or Middleburg Humane Foundation. May she rest in eternal peace.

We shared holidays, family meals, love for sports, and time on the deck enjoying the flowers Kim planted. Virginia was a grandmother to my daughter, a good mother to my wife and a great mother-in- law to me. She made delicious homemade spaghetti meals for everyone. She will be missed, and I will miss spending time with her. Miss you Virginia!

Kim and Dan, I'm so sorry for the loss of your Mom, and Mother in Law. Although I didn't know Virginia personally, I see qualities that others have noted about her, in you Kim. What greater evidence of a life well lived, than to leave a legacy of caring for all the inhabitants of this earth.
My condolences to you both, Kathleen

Kim & Family,
I was so sad to hear of this news. Virginia was one of my mentors from the start of my nursing career 39 years ago. Her sass, her do no harm take no __, get the job done, and tenacity made her a powerhouse nurse! I learned so much from her and it contributed to the nurse I am today. For that I am grateful! I will continue to treasure the many memories made back at "Hanks Place" as she liked to call it. As Debbie said, you were the highlight of her life, and she always talked about you and your successes. May the words shared here in honor of your mom, fill your heart with comfort and peace. Prayers to you and yours! RIP Rawson

Virginia was my first preceptor in the ICU some 30 plus years ago. I often think about her fondly in my everyday practice and remember the skills she taught me and more so, the tough love she dealt out (deservedly) RIP.

Kim...my condolences on the loss of your mom. Virginia was one of a kind! I first met her in 1980s when I was a new nurse I needed help starting a difficult IV. She came to the rescue and from there she was always someone I knew I could count on. Her work ethic was like none other. She was always her patients advocate whether it was popular or not. Working with her, you could count on her to be honest, brutally honest sometimes. But she had the kindest heart and you knew it came from a place of caring. She was a hard worker, fearless and had integrity...."there ain´t no right way to do the wrong thing." She taught me so much over those years. She touched so many lives in such a powerful way. These next days, weeks, and months will be difficult for you as you grieve, but I hope thru those times you can find strength in her legacy, and know that this world was a much better place because your mom made a difference. I wish I had the chance to meet you, because she often spoke of you . ~Cheryl Deuel

Kim -
Working with your Mom these past few years at the garden center has been a real treat. She had such a wry sense of humor that we could count a few solid laughs every day. As a fellow retired person it was nice to share the things we knew and the many things we continued to learn. Most of all she was genuine, and a truly caring person. She will really be missed. I´m so sorry for your loss.

Kim,
May you feel God´s comfort during this difficult time. (Excerpt from Footprints poem) The Lord replied, "My precious child. I love you and I would never leave you during your times of trials and suffering. When you saw only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you."
Hugs, Sandy

God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. Virginia was a dear friend and neighbor who I could always count on. We did a lot of shopping trips and sightseeing and thoroughly enjoyed them. But she never got used to Virginia weather. I would be in flip flops and she would be bundled up from head to toe just freezing. Many laughs over that !! Love you Rip in peace my friend until we meet again.

Virginia always struck me as a true force. Devoted to her daughter Kimberlee, family, friends and caring for people as an eminently skilled nursing professional. I recall her tendnling her humble garden in Lancaster when first we met. She was very pleased with the onset of the bountiful tomato harvest.

Moreover, I remember her care, guidance and comfort when my eldest son lie seriously injured in the CCU where she tended expertly cared for and guided the recover of patients and family. She was a skilled professional and helped get us all through over a month of trying times.

Wishing all who knew her, loved her and had the pleasure of her presence, all the blessings and peace in this trying time. Wishing her eternal peace and joy as she's now with those who went before her.
Until we meet again Virginia.
