Janet Wright Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sanders Funeral Home - Lubbock on Mar. 24, 2025.
Janet Ruth Wright, beloved mother, grandmother, friend, and lifelong educator, passed away peacefully on March 18, 2025, in Lubbock, Texas, at the age of 86.
Born in November 1938, in Berkeley, California, Janet was the daughter of Ernest and Emma Miller. She was married to Dr. Henry Albert Wright on September 11, 1961, in Alameda, California. Dr. Wright, a distinguished Horn Professor at Texas Tech University, passed away on October 23, 1994. Together, Janet and Henry raised four children: Michael, Sandy, Paul, and Trent.
The Wright family made Lubbock their home in 1967, where Janet dedicated much of her life to Texas Tech University. She worked in the College of Media and Communications, serving as a counselor until her retirement in January 2010. Janet was known for her kindness, wisdom, and the impact she had on countless students throughout her career.
Janet had many close friends and was an active member of the Lubbock community. She enjoyed attending Texas Tech sporting events, particularly basketball games, where she was a passionate supporter of the Red Raiders. Her love for the university and her spirited presence at these events will be missed by all who shared in her enthusiasm.
Janet was predeceased by her husband Henry, as well as her sons Michael, Paul, and Trent. She is survived by her daughter, Sandy Anderson of Houston, Texas, and her grandson, Chase Anderson, who is currently attending Tulane University.
A private service will be held for close family. Janet's legacy of love, friendship, and dedication to education will be remembered by all who knew her.

Janet was amazing! Bear with me, because this is a little long winded. I was a Tech student in the early 90's. I worked full time in my career field for the last 3 of the 6 (yes, six) years I was a student. Ultimately, I left without a degree for a job opportunity. Twelve years later with online classes now readily available, I needed a win in my life. So, in 2009 I decided to call what was now the College of Mass Comm and find out if I could take my last class (yes, I only needed a Humanities credit) and actually get my degree.
When I called I was shocked when the voice on the other end of the line identified herself as Janet Wright. I told her that my name was Tim, and I had been a Mass Comm student beginning in 1991. She immediately ratttled off my full name and asked me if I was calling to finish my bachelor's degree. I told her "yes, if I can, I'd like to do it online since I live in San Antonio." Then dumbfounded, I asked her how in the world she actually remembered me. Her response was "I always hope that my kids that didn't finish will call and graduate. She added that I had to do it quick because she really wanted to retire.
She looked up my missing class and I told her that I would like to take a junior level English course to satisfy the requirement. Her response was something a lot like "are you sure that's a good idea? You don't... wait, you can write just fine, it's math you were never good at." We both laughed because it was absolutely true.
She said she'd call me back in a day or so and let me know what Dr. Kinghorn had to say about if I had to take more classes or just the one. "Wait, He's still there too?" I asked. Sure enough she called back about half an hour later (ever the over achiever) and said to register for the class. I took it and made an A, and received my degree in December '09.
Later, I went back to Tech online and got may MA in Mass Comm in December '19. After just shy of 30 years in tv, I transitioned to my new career as an educator at a local community college. It's because of the inspiration, caring, and dedication of people like Janet that I knew that I wanted to be in education too. Rest well and know that you made a huge impact on my life. I cannot thank you enough.

Janet was such a blessing to me. She trained me to be an academic advisor and for that i will always be thankful. My prayers go out to her family. She was loved by the kids in Mass Communications.

Mrs. Wright, you were wonderful and my favorite advisor! Prayers go out to your family. I'm so grateful for the help you gave me personally, and for all of the help you gave others. You left a tremendous legacy behind for Tech and the Mass Comm department!

I was sad to see the death notice on my dear friend, Janet Wright. I met Janet in December 1995 when I first went to work at TTU. She called me and asked me to come to the Dean's office to meet her. She left the Dean's office and became the Advisor in the College of Mass Communications and left a lifetime of proud students behind when she retired. I thought of her often although I had lost touch with her after I retired myself. Peace to her remaining family.
