Joan was born to Arthur and Doris (Fronk) Heltemes on April 15, 1948, at home in Wadena, MN. She attended Wadena Public Schools and furthered her interest in accounting at Wadena Technical College.
On October 15, 1968, Joan married Melvin Poppe and they made their home in Wadena. Her days were busy raising her family and driving truck. Away from work she liked to play cards, cook, bake, embroider and work crossword and jigsaw puzzles. She also fished and watched wrestling. Most important was her dedication towards others through food service in the community and time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Preceding Joan in death were her husband, Melvin (1990); parents, Art and Doris; and siblings, Judy Wiebesick and Wayne Heltemes; parents-in-law, William and Alvina (Weaver) Poppe.
Joan is survived by her children, Ruth (Lance) Jenkins of Fargo, ND and Bill (Brandy) Poppe of Wadena; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; siblings: Joyce (Dwayne) Weiher of Bemidji, Betty Kne of Murfreesboro, TN, Vern (Gigi) Heltemes of Blackduck, Carol Weiher of Boone, ND and Gail (Tom) Moore of Fargo, ND; along with many nieces and nephews.
Honorary urn bearers will be of Joan's great grandchildren, Erich Schuessler and Carrie Vaughan.
Urn Bearers will be Amber Schuessler, Ashley Zogg, Wayne Vaughan, Brandon Monson, Keri Toon, Andrew Meier, Autumn Poppe, Crystal Poppe and Rachel Poppe.
