Karen Mary Schwarz died on November 2, 2024, following a medical emergency that led to an accident. Born on December 20, 1946, in Kankakee, Illinois, Karen graduated from Benton Harbor High School before attending Lake Michigan Community College, where she met the love of her life, Warren Schwarz. They married in March of 1969 and enjoyed forty years together. They made their home in St. Johns, Michigan, restoring an antique home and raising three children.
Karen's academic pursuits took her to Michigan State University, where she earned both an undergraduate degree and a master's degree in education. She dedicated over thirty years of her life to teaching elementary school, known for her extensive knowledge and passion for education.
An adventurous spirit, Karen loved exploring the world, with Italy being her favorite destination. She was a true collector, an avid reader, and had a deep appreciation for history, art and music. A devoted MSU fan, she enjoyed tailgating at Spartan games and supporting her favorite team. The last ten years she spent winters in Central Florida and immensely enjoyed her time there.
Karen was a founding member of Mint City Patchers and an active participant in multiple quilting groups. She spent Fridays quilting with friends, sharing her passion for crafts and camaraderie. After Warren's passing in 2009, her bulldog, Harper, became a comforting presence in her life. Karen's greatest pride and joy were her children and grandchildren, whose lives and achievements she followed with enthusiasm. Her warmth, memorable smile, and engaging conversations will be missed by all who knew her.
Karen is survived by her children, Cress (Warner) Smith, John (DeAnn) Schwarz, and Amanda (Benjamin VanSickle) Schwarz, along with her beloved grandchildren, Morgan, Evelyn, and Jonathan; canine companion, Sophie; as well as many in-laws, extended family members and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren, and her parents.
Family and friends are invited to a memorial visitation on Friday, November 8, 2024, from 2–7 PM at McGeehan Funeral Home, 1500 Waterford Parkway, St. Johns. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 9, at 11 AM at Pilgrim Global Methodist Church, St. Johns, with a luncheon to follow at the church. Friends may gather at the church on Saturday beginning at 10 AM. Her ashes will be interred at Mt. Rest Cemetery in the future.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Spartan Marching Band, American Diabetes Association or to a charity of your choice.
