Katie Maude Evers Lightsey, known affectionately as Katie Maude, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 25, 2025. Born on December 5, 1920, in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, she was the daughter to Mr. Grady LaFayette Evers and Mrs. Fay Freeman Evers. She was a beacon of warmth and generosity throughout her remarkable 104 years of life.
Katie Maude's hands, always busy, were a testament to her loving spirit. Her talents as a seamstress were used for many years as she worked for Russell Mills. She crafted not only garments but also a life rich with the aroma of her cooking, which she generously shared with friends, family, church members, and anyone needing a good, home-cooked meal. Her garden was her sanctuary, a place where she toiled alongside her husband, Waylon, preparing for the upcoming crops. The bounty they grew was not just for their table but for anyone in need.
Her garden's produce was much like her love: it nourished, it comforted, and it was given freely. Katie Maude's kindness was the sunshine that helped others grow; she never hesitated to extend a helping hand or a listening ear. Her selflessness was as natural to her as breathing, and her spunk and humor were the sparks that lit up any room she entered.
Family was the cornerstone of Katie Maude's life. She cared for her nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews with a devotion that knew no bounds. They were her children in heart and spirit, and she instilled in them the values of compassion and resilience. As a supportive and loving wife, she stood as a pillar of strength and partnership, teaching by example the power of enduring love.
Katie Maude lived a long and beautiful life filled with many milestones, world events, and unique experiences. She conquered challenges, served faithfully, and approached each day with a good sense of humor. To speak of her is to speak of love in action, of a life that exemplified the beauty of giving more than receiving, and what it means to be Christ-like. With all that she did, all that she gave, and all that she shared, there's no doubt that Katie Maude was welcomed with the well-earned words of "well done, my good and faithful servant."
She is survived by her nephew, Curtis Wayne Coker; great-nephews, Jay Evers, Richard McGill, Wayne Coker; great-nieces, LeAnne Moran, Ashley Powell, Deanna Bone; and many other cousins and extended family.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Waylon Lightsey; parents, Grady & Fay Evers; brother, Cecil LaFayette Evers; sister, Allene Evers Harry; nephew, Jerry Evers; and niece, Ann Moore.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Eagle Creek Cemetery Fund or the Eagle Creek Baptist Church Building Fund, 7680 Horseshoe Bend Road, Dadeville, AL 36853.
