Manfred Gross Obituary

Manfred Albert Gross, also known as Fred, passed away on February 1, 2024, at the age of 83, in Prosperity, South Carolina. He was born on April 29, 1940, in Hohenstadt, Germany. Fred's inquisitive nature led him to constantly seek knowledge throughout his life. He had a passion for soccer (football) from a young age and excelled at the sport in Germany. In 1959, he embarked on a journey to the United States, where he established a lifelong career as a butcher.

Fred's thirst for knowledge extended beyond his primary profession. He pursued education in electronics and later established his own TV/CB repair shop in his home. Additionally, Fred dedicated his time as an Auxiliary Police Officer in Wakeman, quickly rising to the rank of Captain. He also served as a Special Deputy for the Huron County Sheriff's Department K9 Unit. Fred was a proud member of the Order of Masons and served as the President of the RAT Patrol, a Citizen Band Radio Community organization that provided assistance to those in need.

Fred is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Genevieve (Daugherty), and their four children: Esther (Brian), Perry (Becky), Michael, and Matthew. He was a cherished grandfather to Tabatha, Brandon, James, JoBeth, Jacob, and Julia, and a doting great-grandfather to nine. Fred was preceded in death by his father and mother, Heinrich and Kunigunda Gross, his sister Rosa and her husband Fritz Bänsch, his half-sister Trudy Parks, and his nephew Holger Bänsch.

In terms of education, Fred earned a Certificate in Meat Cutting from Bad-Homburgh Trade School. He further pursued his passion for electronics, obtaining an Associates Degree from DeVry University. Fred also took courses in Labor Education and Research Service at The Ohio State University.

During his military service in the Army from 1963 to 1969, Fred demonstrated his dedication and commitment. He received medals for marksmanship and good conduct, and proudly served his country with honor.  

After his military career Fred achieved a proud moment of becoming an American Citizen in 1969.

Fred's hobbies brought him immense joy throughout his life. He was an avid bass fisherman, participating in numerous tournaments. He actively supported lake conservation efforts and was passionate about educating youth in this area. Additionally, Fred had a keen interest in photography, computers, genealogy, metal detecting, and woodworking.

A celebration of life service for Fred will be held in Ohio mid-March.
