Monte Sherrill Cornett, of Shamrock, TX passed away Wednesday, April 16, 2025 in Shamrock at the age of 74 years and 8 months. The family will hold a memorial service at 10:00AM on Friday, May 2, 2025 at Shamrock Cemetery in Shamrock.
Cremation and Arrangements are by Robertson Funeral Directors of Shamrock.
Monte was born August 16, 1950 in Altus, OK to Alvin Herman and Wilma Jean (Moore) Cornett. He grew up in Gould, OK and graduated from Gould High School in 1968, then attended Panhandle State College. He married Brenda Kay Whitener on August 3, 1992 in Shamrock. She preceded him in death on March 8, 2023.
Following college, Monte worked at many different jobs over the years. He first worked as a cowboy on the Hitch Ranch. He worked in Olustee, OK at the copper mine and later worked with a contractor building homes in Altus. Monte then moved to Shamrock, TX, where he began a long career with West Texas Utilities. After sustaining a serious injury at work, he went into law enforcement for several years. He served as Chief of Police in Shamrock and as a Wheeler County Sheriff's Deputy and was a proud member of the local Sheriff's Posse. Monte was also a certified teacher and last worked for the Shamrock Independent School District, serving in various roles for 26 years. He was also the Owner/Operator of M & C Cattle Company.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Wilma Cornett; his wife Brenda; one daughter, Kaylee Cornett; one son, Clay Cornett; and one brother, Lindel Cornett.
Monte is survived by two sons, Sheldon Cornett and wife, Tabitha, of Shamrock and Shane Cornett of Delaware; his brother, Craig Cornett and wife, Dana, of Lone Wolf, OK; two sisters, Shirley Jordan and husband, Carl, of Muskogee, OK and Charlotte Springfield of Hollis, OK; three grandchildren, Cody Cornett of Delaware and Kye and Kasyn Cornett of Shamrock; and numerous other family members.
