Shirley Marie Ashley, age 93, of Colonial Heights, VA, passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday, May 3, 2025.
Born and raised in Peterburg, VA, she was the daughter of the late Thelma Thomasson Butler and James Butler. She was also preceded in death by her special friend, Albert Topian.
Shirley was a lifelong active member of First Baptist Church in Petersburg, VA. She served the church in many ways throughout her life to include teaching Sunday school, singing in the choir, and she was one of the first women to serve as Deacon. She retired after 43 years as a secretary for the Virginia Department of Highways in the Richmond District Shop but continued to work part-time in retirement. Shirley will be remembered most for her kindness and her devotion to her family.
She is survived by her sister, Gloria B. Miller, nephews, Scott Miller, his wife Jeanne Marie and his children Nicholas and Laura; Ashley Miller, his wife Abby and children Regan, Dean, and Reid; Stuart Miller, his wife Lori and children Marshall and Jake.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 12, 2025 at First Baptist Church, 235 W. Washington Street, Petersburg, VA 23803, followed by interment at Blandford Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the funeral service beginning at 1:00 p.m.
