Susan (King) Wonnell, 92, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 10, 2024 at St. Andrews Nursing Home in Batesville, IN. Born on December 24, 1931 and raised in Lancaster, OH, she graduated from Lancaster High School in 1949. Susan married James "Jim" E. Wonnell of Highland Park, IL on December 5, 1951 in Coronado Naval Air Station, CA where he was recalled into the Navy as an aircraft carrier pilot during the Korean War.
She is survived by her three sons and their wives: Kent and Natalia Wonnell of Old Saybrook, CT; Jon and Frances Wonnell of Princeton Junction, NJ; Nic and Amy Wonnell of Batesville, IN; nine beloved grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by Jim, and two infant grandchildren.
In 1954, Susan graduated from San Diego State University (now UCSD), where she was a proud member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. She and Jim moved to Batesville in 1963 when Jim was hired by Hillenbrand Industries to establish a company airport and flight operations.
Susan was known for her open arms, warm smile, and giving heart for many in the community, and beyond. Her generosity was shown all around as she was the co-founder of the Jack and Jill Preschool and also volunteered with many organizations including Hospitality Hall at the Margaret Mary Community Hospital (MMH), the Batesville Memorial Public Library, New Horizons, the United Methodist Church, and the Batesville Garden Club (Batesville Beautification League). She also was a substitute teacher in local schools from the 1970's to the 1990's. Her faith was a great force in Susan's life, as she participated and mentored in church study groups, youth teaching, choir, and several prayer and support groups. She also enjoyed many activities including playing bridge, tennis, bowling, and golfing. Susan moved to Venice, FL, continuing her missionary work for 25 years from 1993 to 2018, when she returned home to Batesville. She had a loving way with everyone, and a community presence that touched the hearts of many.
In memory of Susan, contribute daily acts of kindness or love to someone you know, or more importantly, a complete stranger. "Love all around!"
A Celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
