William M. Goldberger of Columbus was born on December 26, 1928, in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. He is preceded in death by his parents, Nathan and Ruth (nee Miller), and his sister, Wilma Goldberger Thompson. He is survived by his wife, Marcia (nee Ginsberg); his daughter, Jo; his sons, Adam, Jesse, and Eli (Inna); and his grandchildren, Lydia and Leo.
Dr. Goldberger graduated from Perth Amboy High School (1946), and from the Georgia Institute of Technology (1950) with a degree in chemical engineering. He earned a master's degree (1956) and a doctorate (1961) in chemical engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn (now the New York University–Tandon School of Engineering).
As a Naval Reservist, he was called to active duty during the Korean War, serving on the destroyer USS Monssen (DD798) from 1952 to 1954.
He worked for the Bethlehem Steel Corporation (1950–51), the U.S. Army Signal Corps Laboratory (1951–52), the U.S. Steel Corporation (1956–57), the Battelle Memorial Institute–Columbus Laboratories (1960–79), and the Superior Graphite Company (1979–2002). At Battelle he was a senior engineer and the manager of the Minerals and Metallurgical Processing Division, and a member of the Director's Senior Technical Council; at Superior Graphite, he was the director of research and then the vice-president of research.
Dr. Goldberger authored more than fifty technical papers, many dealing with the application of high and ultra-high temperatures in chemical processing. He was the section 2 editor dealing with liquid-liquid and solid-solid systems for the fifth edition (1973) and the sixth edition (1983) of the Chemical Engineers' Handbook.
Dr. Goldberger also authored two novels, a dramatic play, and a musical, and wrote and illustrated a children's book. He played the piano and was a ventriloquist, a watercolorist, a seemingly tireless swimmer, an avid golfer, and an excellent cook.
He will be remembered with love.
Graveside service will be at 11:30, Monday, September 23 at New Tifereth Israel Cemetery, 2565 Performance Way, Columbus.
