Alma Rosetta Elston, 85, of Roanoke, passed away at 9:44 pm Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at her home surrounded by family.
Alma was born on February 9, 1939, in Huntington, IN, the daughter of Everett Smith and Thelma (Stewart) Smith. She attended Huntington High School and married the love of her life James R. Elston on June 10, 1955, in Huntington, IN. They shared 36 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on January 30, 1992. She was a member of the Moose Lodge 837 and a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church both of Huntington, IN
Alma co-owned T & R Alteration with her mother Thelma for over 50 years. She was a gifted seamstress and truly enjoyed doing what she loved. Alma was an avid reader of romance novels and anything to do with history. During the 50's & 60's Alma and James traveled all around the country on their motorcycle with the Harley Davidson Riding Club. Alma could see the beauty in all God's creatures, especially owls. When she wasn't busy taking care of her family, also known as her pride and joys, she liked to go shopping, gardening, fishing for bluegills, bird watching and cheering on IU basketball. Alma was passionate about many things, however nothing meant more to her than her children and grandchildren. Most will remember Alma for her talented sewing, but her family will cherish all the wonderful memories and the life lessons she taught them.
Alma is survived by her loving children, Sheila Ann Garrison of Roanoke, IN and, Michael R. (Penny) Elston of Muncie, IN; grandchildren, Zachariah (Lindsay) Garrison, Erik Garrison, Heather Elston, Lauren Elston; and a great grandson, Blake James Garrison. She is preceded in death by her husband, James R. Elston, father, Everett Smith, mother, Thelma Smith, brothers, David Smith, and Liston Smith.
