Dale E. Bickel, age 97, of Indianapolis, IN, and formerly of Huntington, passed away on Monday, July 22, 2024, at Hamilton Trace Senior Living, Fishers, IN.
Dale was born on February 6, 1927, in Huntington, IN, to the late Sylvester J. and Vida (Shannon) Bickel. He married Joan M. McNamara and she preceded him in death in 1996.
Dale was a 1945 graduate of Huntington Catholic High School and furthered his education with a degree at Huntington College in journalism. He served in the United States Army Air Corps. He was an Editor of the NW Indiana Catholic Diocese of Gary, IN, and Editor at Our Sunday Visitor in Huntington. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, VFW #2689, Knights of Columbus #1014, South Venice Beach Civic Association, and the American Legion in Venice.
Dale is survived by two sons, John (Crystal) Bickel, Golden, CO, Thomas Bickel, Sarasota, FL; three daughters, Suzanne (Ron) Harker, Lowell, IN, Mary (Terry) Killen, Rockwood, TN, Jeanne Nowosielski, Indianapolis, IN; one stepsister, Suzanne Ness; 7 grandchildren, Christopher, Matthew, Andrew, Mariah, Joanie, Jennifer and Jacob; and 5 great-grandchildren.
Along with his parents and wife he was preceded in death by one brother, Sergeant John Richard Bickel who died serving our country during WWII.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, July 25, 2024, from 4pm to 7pm at McElhaney Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson St, Huntington, IN.
Recitation of the Rosary will be held on Friday, July 26, 2024, at 9:30 am prior to the calling hours from 10am to 11am with the Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11am all at St. Mary Catholic Church, 903 N. Jefferson Street, Huntington, IN, 46750, with Fr. Thomas Zehr presiding.
Military Grave Honors and burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Huntington, IN.
In lieu of flowers memorials can be made St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in care of McElhaney Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson St, Huntington, IN 46750.
