Thomas MAHONY Obituary

Dr. Thomas Mahony was born in 1932, in London to Irish parents, John and Alice Mahony. In 1939, the family moved to Bath, where he lived and went to school, graduating in 1950. He then transferred to Dublin to attend medical school at Trinity College and received his M. D. in 1956. After internship and residency in Internal Medicine, he emigrated to the United States in 1959, to take up a residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the University of Illinois Hospital in Chicago.

In 1964, he joined Dr. Sidney Marks in Richland, Washington State and was Medical Director of the Laboratory and Nuclear Medicine at Kadlec Medical Center until his retirement in 1999. He collaborated in radiation research with Dr. Maurice Sullivan at Battelle Pacific Northwest National Laboratory for twenty years. At Kadlec, he was Chief of Staff twice and Chairman of the Medical Staff Building Committee for the new Kadlec Hospital in 1970. After retiring, he served on the Kadlec Medical Center Board of Trustees for six years.

He was an active member of Christ the King Church in Richland, serving as a Eucharistic Minister and on the Board and President of the Central Washington Catholic Foundation.

In Dublin, Dr. Mahony met Nancy who was to be his future wife. They were happily married in 1960 in Cork, Ireland, for more than sixty years. They have three children, Hilary, Peter and Ann Marie; and four grandchildren, Erin, Clare, Maureen and Shannon.

Such a fine man! Tom and Peter spent many cold winter weekend hunting pheasant on the Roller farmland with Dr Rod Coler and I back in the 70's. Those wonderful hardy hikes in the countryside, and the merry holiday family get-togethers are endearing childhood memories for the whole Coler family. Our Condolences to Tom's lovely family.

In addition to being a skilled and ethical physician, Tom was highly respected by all the medical staff at Kadlec Hospital.
Tom and Nancy were very kind to us when we arrived in Richland in 1978, and then were personally instrumental and supportive when we joined Christ the King Church and School.
He indeed had a life well lived as a doctor, and as a man of integrity.

Tom,
You were a gentleman and a scholar; a physician in the finest sense. You earned the respect of your colleagues.

When I was in 7th grade at Christ the King school, I went down to Kadlec hospital and got staph and E. coli bacteria cultures from Dr. Mahony (something that I doubt would happen today) for use in my science fair project. He gave me encouragement and a lot of guidance in how to properly and safely perform my experiments.

Besides going to the same church as him, I was also in Boy Scouts with his son Pete, in Troup 249. I remember him with great fondness and admiration.

Pete and All,
I was so sorry to read of your Dad´s death today when my brother sent the obituary. What gentle and lovely people he and your Mom were! I lost touch with them when they moved to Spokane. I´ve thought of all of you many times in the last many years.
Our family is praying for your Dad and Mom and all of you. Will there be a funeral?
I´d love to catch up with you sometime. My email is [email protected].

All the best!!!
Katie
