Melvin Paul Covert, age 72, passed away peacefully at his home in Centennial, Colorado, on March 26, 2026. He was born on January 22, 1954, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, to Jerry and Margaret (Bauler) Covert. Melvin lived a life marked by service, curiosity, and dedication. He had a deep love for travel and cherished the opportunity to visit his ancestral villages in Ireland. An active and engaged individual, he enjoyed golfing, jogging, and volunteering at Wildlife Sanctuary near Keenesburg, Colorado. He was especially proud of completing a half marathon, along with numerous 5K and 10K races. He graduated from Robertson High School in Las Vegas, New Mexico, in 1972, and went on to earn a degree in Geology from Eastern New Mexico University in 1976. While at Eastern, Melvin completed ROTC and was commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army. He proudly served three years in Munich, Germany, followed by four years at Fort Riley, Kansas, as a Combat Engineer Officer. After being honorably discharged from active duty in 1982, he continued his service in the Army Reserves, ultimately achieving the rank of Captain. Following his military service, Melvin began his professional career as a geologist in the oil industry in Hobbs, New Mexico. He later pursued further education at Texas A&M University, earning a Master of Business Administration and becoming a Certified Public Accountant. Melvin then moved to Colorado, where he worked as a controller for American Feed and Farm Supply in Denver for seven years. He spent the remainder of his career as an accountant with Duke Energy in Denver. Melvin is survived by his siblings: Terry (Wanda) Covert of Liberal, Kansas; Yvonne (Sam) Lopez of Mora, New Mexico; Mike (Becky) Covert of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Jim (Deana) Covert of Lincoln, Nebraska. He is also survived by his special Aunt Zelda Sherlock, cousins, many nieces and nephews, great-nephews, and great-nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jerry and Margaret Covert, and his brother, Randy Covert. Melvin will be greatly missed by his family and friends. His legacy of service, perseverance, and love for life will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
