Gail Russell Obituary

Gail Fairbanks Russell died peacefully in Centennial, Colorado, surrounded by love. She was 80.

Gail was born in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1945. She was raised by Alexander and Winifred Russell and later Evelyn Caswell Russell. She spent her early years between Springfield and Longmeadow and graduated from Longmeadow High School in 1964. After high school, she earned her Associates Degree and went on to attend the Northeast Airlines Stewardess Training Center at Boston's Logan Airport.

Gail began her career as a flight attendant at Braniff Airlines, and then spent 30+ years flying for Delta. In the mid 1970s she fell in love with the mountain West, moved to Denver, and never left. Gail was very social. She had many dear friends and close family in Denver, and she remained connected to her family and friends back East.

Gail loved being a flight attendant. It was a perfect fit. She embraced travel and adventure, and especially cherished meeting people on every flight and forming genuine connections. For many years, she spent a month each year in Jamaica, where she delighted in the food, culture, and rhythm of the island.

Following the events of 9/11, when the airline industry was downsizing, Gail went into early retirement. She used that time to fully enjoy all that Colorado had to offer and to deepen her relationships with family and friends. She loved playing mahjong, volunteering at her local women's shelter, walking in Washington Park and on the Highline Canal Trail, visiting Vail, CO, and enjoying happy hours and neighborhood potluck dinners.

Despite having been proposed to three times over the years, Gail never married. Instead, her greatest lifelong loves were her family and her many dear friends. Always a kid at heart, she took special joy in her beloved role as Auntie spending time with her nieces and nephews of all ages.

She was one of the kindest people you could ever meet, and also the life of the party. Quick to do something silly to make others laugh, and always making sure everyone felt welcome, happy, and well fed. One of her favorite places was her home on Arapahoe Lake, where she delighted in collecting things that were cobalt blue, feeding her beloved ducks, and taking out her paddle boat to visit with friends on the lake. She often carried candy and small treats in her purse, sharing them with strangers and spreading a bit of everyday magic wherever she went.

She had a generous heart and a mischievous spirit; time with Gail was always a joy-filled adventure.

Gail was predeceased by her older brothers, Peter Russell (who passed away on March 1st, 2026) and John Russell (2018). She is survived by her extended family, nieces, nephews, and countless deeply cherished, lifelong friends.

A celebration of life will be held in Evergreen, CO, and she will be buried next to her mother and brother at Hillcrest Park Cemetery in Springfield, MA.
