John Gray Obituary

Dr. John R. Gray died on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, surrounded by his family at his home in Golden, Colorado. He is survived by Linda, his wife of 59 years, sister Merri, sons Jeff and Steve (Amy) and granddaughters Katie, Hannah and Grace.
John was born in Carroll, Iowa on December 28, 1937, the oldest of four children of Harold and Phyllis Gray. The family moved to the Denver area during his youth. He graduated from Englewood High School, and after attending the University of Denver as a music major for one year, he enrolled at Colorado State University, where he graduated as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1962. John enlisted in the United States Army that year and was stationed at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. He met Linda Myers at a chorale audition one evening during his enlistment. They were married on June 25, 1966. They moved to Arvada and then Golden where they bought a small acreage that allowed John to pursue one of his favorite pastimes: the training and riding of horses. John was happiest on horseback, wandering the foothills of Jefferson County at every opportunity. He opened the Jefferson Animal Clinic in Arvada in 1967. He practiced small animal veterinary medicine there for over three decades. He was beloved by his clients for his skill, compassion and genuine concern for them and their pets. Outside of work he continued to enjoy music. He was a talented singer, guitarist and pianist. He enjoyed gathering with friends and playing music together. He sang in the Denver Classic Chorale and in the choir at church. He was active in his community as well, holding a seat on the Jefferson County Fair Board until 2018.
John loved his family dearly. He provided a loving and stable home and set an example of faith, hard work and integrity that left an impression on everyone who knew him. His legacy is a treasure to those who love him and is one with eternal significance.
A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, July 25 at Arvada Covenant Church at 5555 Ward Road at 11:00.

Sincere condolences to the family and friends of Doctor Gray. My folks started taking our dogs and cats to the Jefferson Animal clinic almost the day it opened. My dad and he especially bonded over their love of Airedale Terriers. He treated dozens of our animal companions with great care and compassion for more than 30 years, until he retired. Doctor Gray was the consummate professional, and a fine person whom my family respected deeply. Godspeed.

Dear Linda:
I am standing in my living room watching John & Rick shaking hands and smiling at one another. Of course, Rick was looking up and John was looking down at Rick and saying "This is different for you!" You usually are looking down! We all laughed at that because John was looking down and Rick was looking up as they met! Isn't it nice that we can reminisce with a laugh at this time of our lives. Rick recently told me that he wished he had his Dad longer than he did and that way they could try to reminisce together. I hope that you have all the love and support you need to get through the next days, weeks, and months and you know I'll be thinking of you through it all. I love you, Beth Ann.

My wife and I first met John in college at Colorado State University in 1957. John and I roomed together for 2 years while at CSU and have enjoyed our lifelong friendship ever since.

John was my best man at our wedding in Arvada in the fall of 1959 and that demonstrates the love and respect that we have always had for each other!

His warm smile, his hearty greeting and his love for everything he participated in will truly be missed by everyone who knew and dearly loved Dr. Gray.

As I think of people who made a difference in my life as a young girl, it is John and Linda who come immediately to mind. It was a privilege to have know John Gray. I have many fond memories of spending time with Dr. Gray's horses and dogs, as he taught me so much. He helped foster my love of horses. John was also a great influence on Todd in their shared calling to veterinary medicine. We remember John's great smile. In loving memory of a wonderful person. We will miss you Dr. Gray. With sympathy, Jo Ann & Todd Hammond

John and Linda were great friends for over 50 years. We so admired John's commitment to never giving up in his fight with health issues and continuing to do the things he loved. And Linda being by his side helping him through it all. He tried so hard! We have so many good memories of our times together, through the good and the difficult times in all our lives. Love you and miss you so much. Cary & Judie Hall
